TESTIMONY OF A CHANGED LIFE
A TESTIMONY OF PASTOR JOSEPH CHINALPAN
Proverbs 16:25 – “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” (ESV)
Joseph Chinalpan, commonly known as “Joshua” is a resident of Calanan, Tabuk City, Province of Kalinga.
Joseph was sent to Baguio City by his parents to study and possibly obtain a degree. However, instead of being in the classroom, he was in and out of jail because of the many vices he had, including drug addiction and involvement with the Sigue-Sigue Commando Gang. Admittedly, that brought shame to his family, earning him the title “The Black Sheep” of the Chinalpan family.
While in jail, he joined several other religions and performed a ritual exercise because he wanted to change. However, he became worse instead of changing for the better.
In Apayao Province, he joined a rebellious group that was advocating change through revolution. He joined hoping to fight corruption and injustices. His commitment and dedication as a diehard member of the Kilusan were noticed by his leaders and that made him a Cadre or Commander.
One day in the mountains, Kadudo, his comrade who had been safely escaping death despite several encounters with the military dared to give him what he considered as his “anting-anting” (amulet) – A small Gideon Testament. Joseph instantly recognized it because it was similar to what he received years ago in jail which he used to wrap his tobacco.
In Baggao, Cagayan, the group was ambushed, and Joseph being the radio man, was the number one target. But miraculously, he survived the volley of shots directed at him. Three of his companions, including the one who gave him the “anting-anting” died.
Again, another encounter happened on July 27, 1988, at Solana, Cagayan. Joseph’s group was captured, tortured, and thrown into prison. They searched Joseph’s belongings and confiscated everything that was considered subversive, including money. To his surprise, he still found the small Book in his backpack. They said the Book was the only non-subversive document in his possession.
Life in jail was very hard and frustrating for political detainees. In despair, Joseph turned to that small Book because whenever he held it, he felt peace in his heart. From then on, he started reading the small Book and it became a habit for him. He came across John 8:32 which says, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” This challenged him to seek the truth that would give him true freedom. Well, he later found the truth which says, “I am the Way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6).
Joining the armed revolution, religion, pagan rituals, and many others did not give him success in his pursuit for change and freedom. Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ did. Truly, Jesus alone can change the lives of sinners like him.
After conviction of the charges, Joseph was transferred to NBP to serve his sentence. Life at Muntinlupa was much harder and dangerous because of gang wars, but praise God for his protection and guidance. His life in Muntinlupa led him to a Bible School in the prison facility. And by God’s grace, he graduated Bible School, together with other prisoners whose lives were changed through the “Paaral ng Buhay”.
In 1993, Joseph was among the political prisoners who were granted amnesty. And as soon as he got out of jail, he tried to go back to the places where he had been teaching communist ideology to share about Jesus Christ. Before he was armed with an M-16 riffle but now with a different one – The Bible.
Until now, Joseph doesn’t know where Kadudo got the small Testament and why he gave that up for him. But one thing is for sure, it was for God’s greater purpose.
Today, Joseph Chinalpan is the Pastor of All Tribes Ministry in Tabuk, Kalinga. Like Pastor Joseph, many lives have been changed by God through the ministry of The Gideons International, and truly it is God who is worthy to get the glory. Praise be to you, Lord!
